Reiki is universal energy and a method of touch healing. In
the 1800s Mikao Usui began a ten-year quest to learn this ancient healing
method. He learned Sanskrit and took residence in a Zen Buddhist monastery
where he found texts describing this healing formula. Usui named the
healing energy Reiki, which means universal life force energy.
Upon receiving the first attunement in Reiki I, the receiver
becomes a channel for this universal healing energy. The attunement
opens and aligns the flow of the healing energy. This process of attunement
is what sets Reiki apart from other methods of touch healing. The attunement
is not a healing session, it creates the healer.
Once the initial attunement is received, the healer only has
to place her hands on or above the body. The Ki energy does the rest,
without any direction, flowing through the healer’s hands.
Reiki is divided into three degrees. In Level I the attunement
heals physical level diseases in the person who receives it. Reiki I
healing sessions are primarily for self-healing. In Reiki I the healer
learns the hand positions.
Reiki II attunements increase the amount of healing energy
and focuses on the emotional, mental and karmic healing in the person
who receives it. Reiki II also enables distant healing. At this time,
three of the Reiki symbols are introduced and used.
Reiki III is the Master/Teacher’s degree. The use of
Master is interchanged with Teacher, meaning someone who has mastered
a discipline. Reiki III is spiritual energy and healing. It also includes
two more symbols and the method of passing attunements.
